Yesterday I took this photo of my old boy Caiman, and posted it to my Facebook page. I wanted to record the gray on his face, and how much it has progressed from this time last year.

Bowser | Whistler Dog Portrait for the Calendar
Meet the ever-so-charming Bowser. He's a lovely gentle giant, and a world class drooler. Now I know there are people out there who wouldn't consider anyone who drooled "charming" but they just must not be dog people.
Just for fun I changed the background on this shot so that it looks more like a studio setting rather than the interior of a home.
As so often happens, my favourite shot is in black & white. Isn't he handsome!?

Before & After - Fixing the Background
This is Mak. He's one of the dogs I photographed for the calendar. I got several really good shots of him and this is one of my favourites. Unfortunately the background was messy (you'll see in a minute) so I decided to replace it. I often tidy up a background, especially in photos taken outside, but I don't usually do anything this extensive.
The photo already was a fairly formal studio portrait, which made the choice of what to do with the background easy. Here is the before & after shot (I didn't really need to label them, did I?):
And once the background has been created, why stop at grey? Here Mak is again with brown, red, & blue backgrounds. I think the brown might be my favourite, in the end, even though I expected to like the grey best. The brown tone was chosen based on the tan colour on his leg, so it shouldn't be surprising that he looks so good with it.
Which one do you like best?

Library photo exhibition ~ Squamish Valley Photo Club
The Squamish Valley Photo Club is holding an exhibit in the Squamish library foyer in December. We were all asked to submit the photo that we considered to be The Best of 2012.
I had a difficult time choosing one photo that I thought could be "The Best" one of the year for me. In the end this one won, mostly because the effect is exactly what I was hoping to get when I set up my lights. Also, this is a good photo of my dog, Caiman, and I am rarely happy with the photos I take of him.
There is an opening reception at the library tomorrow (December 5th) from 6-8pm, and the display will be up for the rest of the month. Please come by and check it out!

2013 Calendar - Sea to Sky pets
The pet calendar is going to print!
I will have a limited quantity available for sale. These are good quality press-printed 8x8" calendars from printed in Canada. They are $25 each, plus actual shipping costs, and you can email me at photos@tracysutherland.com to place an order. I ship Canada Post, preferably, which is cheapest but means that any out of country orders may not arrive before January 1st.

World's cutest pug puppy | Squamish pet photography
This is Bam Bam. She just moved in a few doors down from me, which makes me very happy, because I will get to photograph her regularly as she grows up.
Cute, huh?
I also got to photograph her together with her brother, Rambo, so you can look forward to seeing those photos soon too.

Sorrel | Squamish Dog Portrait
Way back in May I photographed the beautiful blue eyed Sorrel. Looking at these photos drives home how much nicer it is in Squamish in May than it is in November. There was sunshine, and rhododendrons, and warmth.
Ah well...
Pretty girl, isn't she?
And here is proof that even blue eyes look good in black & white.
(More or less - this isn't a strict black & white but mine seldom are.)

Photo contest placement news!
This weekend I am busy taking photographs in Squamish and Whistler for the calendar, but I had to make time to share some exciting news. Today I awoke to an email congratulating me on having won 4th prize in a dog photo competition!
This is the photo of my dog Caiman:
The competition was on I Shot It. You can see all of the winners here.

SPCA Kittens at Bosley's | Squamish Pet Photography
I went into Bosley's in Squamish one day this week and met these cuties. I'm allergic to cats, so I can't have one, but I would have taken little black Mist home in a heartbeat if I could.
Four tiny little black kittens - two boys, two girls - named Mist, Stormy, Thunder and Lightening.
And below them, two slightly bigger orange boys named Lunchable and Juicebox.
When I was in most of these darlings were still looking for a home. If you are in the area and looking for a kitten please go by and visit with them. They are adorable!
And, lastly, my favourite photo from the day. This is one of the orange boys, I've forgotten which one, and when I saw the light and shadows in this photo I knew it needed to be turned into a black & white image.

Squamish area Casting Call for pets
Last call for models! I will be making my final selections for the calendar in the next few days. There is still time to nominate your pet, if you hurry! This year all photo sessions will be taking place in Squamish, BC.
Most of the pets that have been entered so far are dogs. I would love to get more variety in this calendar!

Kona - Gone Before
It seems fitting for the first post of my new blog to be about the one dog of mine who has gone before. Kona was a truly great dog. This photo was taken less than a week before he left us in January of 2011.
